John F. Mehegan, a jazz pianist, teacher and author whose four-volume work, 'Jazz Improvisation,' is one of the most widely used publications for teaching jazz piano, died of a brain tumor Tuesday at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, Conn. Mr. Mehegan, who was 67 years old, maintained a studio in Westport for 20 years but had moved to Rowayton shortly before his death.
Mr. Mehegan, who was born in Hartford on June 6, 1916, was a self- taught pianist who learned to play from player piano rolls. After studying at the Julius Hartt School of Music in Hartford, he came to New York in 1941 and began a performing career that took him to the Hickory House, the Composer, Birdland, the Drake Room and other nightclubs.
He became a teaching assistant to the jazz pianist Teddy Wilson at the Metropolitan Music School in 1945, and from 1947 until 1964 he taught jazz at the Juilliard School. He was also a jazz instructor at Columbia Teachers College and at the University of Bridgeport and was a lecturer in jazz improvisation at the Yale School of Music.
He began his writing career in 1952 with an instructional series on 'How to Play Jazz Piano' for Metronome magazine. He wrote a dozen instructional books in addition to his four-volume 'Jazz Improvisation.' He was jazz critic from 1957 to 1960 for The New York Herald Tribune and from 1961 to 1962 for WNYC. On March 23, when it was known that he had a terminal illness, a concert in his honor attended by more than 600 people was held at Symphony Space. The performers included Gerry Mulligan, Dave Brubeck, Jill McManus and Larry Willis. The actor Michael Moriarty, who had studied piano with Mr. Mehegan, was master of ceremonies.
